- Date: 2009-01-31
- Time: 2pm for a 3pm formal start
Venue: Edgar Wallace (BaaLondonVenues)
Attendees
and we went round the room saying a few words about what we hoped for from the meetings.
ZIGGI |
to promote APL and learning APL, to establish an APL network to call on. To come with questions expecting to get answers |
CHRIS HOGAN |
to promote APL and tools that show the APL community exists. To support each other workwise. To socialise |
JOHN |
to see old friends. To understand how people are using APL and what for, to get an idea of the direction we are taking |
PATRICK |
has been using J for a year, as a hobby. He like its array processing and conciseness, finds it fascinating to learn and came to get a feel for what others are doing with it |
DICK |
wants to learn something, but does not know what ... (surprise him?) |
JAKE |
to meet like-minded people, to contribute something, particularly to make it easier to start using APL |
STEPHEN |
to populate the APLWIKI |
PETER |
works with Ziggi and is starting APL and hopes the meetings will help him learn how to use it |
MIKE |
to socialise, to help find/create young APL writers and promote the use of APL by youngsters |
PHIL |
meet people you would otherwise not see, hear news of what people are doing , would like to see lots of demonstrations |
ELLIS |
now writes APL as a hobby, comes to meet and make friends, to learn and improve, and to contribute when he can. |
Topics Discussed
- We need to reconstruct this from the notes
COMMENTS from the smaller groups
- if most of us find these meetings useful and enjoyable they will flourish;
- we should keep bureaucracy to a minimum;
- at each meeting we should appoint someone to chair/talk at/run the next meeting;
- at each meeting we should choose someone to publicise the next meeting;
- at each meeting a volunteer should offer to to write it up;
- I would like to put the available BAA money to good use at these meetings;
- the hardest part of getting a new customer for my APL work is persuading them that they will be able to find someone to pick it up if I am not available;
- a few grey haired men in a pub in London (and a few dark haired ones) can not do much to encourage new APL users ... but they can help.
OBSERVATIONS made after the meeting
- I like the venue, we get exclusive use of the upstairs room from about 3pm to around 5 and there is ample opportunity to talk before and afterwards;
- I like the combination of small groups some of the time, and one meeting for part of the time;
- how much of the time we spend as one meeting will depend on the organiser for the day, the minimum is probably about 10 minutes to agree about the next meeting, we should try to do this before the upstairs room fills up with evening drinkers.
Action Points
ELLIS will publish meeting notes in the BAALondon GoogleGroup , with pointers at cla, aplwiki, dyalogusers
- ZIGGI will manage/chair the content of the next meeting around the topic "Education in APL"
- PHIL will book a venue for the next meeting
- DICK will publicise the next meeting, others offered to help.
